Despite failing to score against the strong Denmark side, Werder’s defender was pleased with the team’s overall display on Tuesday night. Although they had made some solid progress in their performance at the back, Serbia’s EUROs journey came to a frustrating end with only a few pieces missing from the puzzle. Despite falling short of a place in the knockouts, Werder’s number 13 played a vital role in Serbia’s back line, remaining on the pitch for the entire 90 minutes in all three group stage games. “I’m proud to be a part of this team and to represent my country. Every time you get selected for the starting XI, it speaks volumes for your performance,” explained Veljkovic, who had the pleasure of meeting Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic after the side’s final outing in Munich. “It was a huge honour to shake his hand for the first time. The support he’s given us says a lot about him.”

Although the Serbs’ group opponents each had potent attacking threats in their ranks, the Eagles leave the tournament having conceded only two goals. Veljkovic himself was instrumental in keeping the likes of Harry Kane, Benjamin Sesko and Rasmus Højlund quiet. “For me personally, it was another experience I learned a lot from,” says the 33-cap international. “All of those top players are at a European Championship for a reason, so you’ve always got to be at the top of your game. If you’re off it by just one or two percent, you’ll get punished.”
