Derrick Köhn was already in attendance for the weekend’s game, even if only watching from the stands. Werder’s new wide man was rooting energetically for his new teammates during the first home game of the season against Borussia Dortmund (0-0). “I found myself jumping out of my seat every time we had a chance. I was cheering on throughout and think that we played really well. I am now just looking forward to getting out on that pitch myself soon and assisting the team.”
This was a first visit to the Weserstadion for the 25-year-old from Hamburg. Despite the fact that he is already well versed in playing in many different footballing settings due to his 19 competitive matches for Galatasaray, including derbies against Besiktas and Fenerbahce, he was still impressed by the atmosphere from the fans in the stands. “It was an amazing atmosphere in the Weserstadion. The fans struck me as being very positive and I also loved all the Werder songs,” Köhn said, smiling.
Arrives with advice from the stars
During his time in Istanbul, Köhn was able to gain valuable advice from high-quality players like Mauro Icardi, Hakim Ziyech and Kerem Demirbay. He knows what strengths he can bring to the Green-Whites, such as his pace and threat going forward. He added: “My time in Istanbul was very helpful for my development. I took on board everything I could there and I think I made another step up. I like to make my mark going forward, but of course I’m primarily a defender. In attack, I look to take on opponents one-on-one, but I also know where I need to improve.”
