Four days after the clash in the Regionalliga Nordost, the professional women’s team of 1. FC Union Berlin will once again host Türkiyemspor Berlin next Thursday, 16 November 2023. Both teams will compete in the round of 16 of the Polytan Cup, the Berlin state cup, for a place in the next round. Kick-off is at 19:30 at the Käthe-Tucholla-Stadion in Bruno-Bürgel-Weg.

Opponent’s check

For Türkiyemspor Berlin, the clear 11:2 defeat last Sunday against 1. FC Union Berlin was their first defeat in two and a half months. As a result, the Kreuzberg club have dropped to 4th place in the table behind FC Carl Zeiss Jena II and are now eleven points behind the Eisernen, who remain top of the Regionalliga Nordost without losing a single point.

In the Berlin Cup, meanwhile, Türkiyemspor beat fourth-division side Borussia Pankow 4:1 in the first round. Many Union fans will also remember this opponent, as their team surprisingly lost 2-1 to Borussia Pankow in the first round last season. It was also the first defeat under the leadership of head coach Ailien Poese. Türkiyemspor also had their fair share of problems in Pankow. The score was still 0-0 at half-time, but in the end the regional league team came out on top with four goals in the second half.

Türkiyemspor celebrated their greatest success in the Polytan Cup in the summer of 2022, when they won the trophy for the first time in the club’s history. Victories over Hertha 03 Zehlendorf, 1. FC Union Berlin, Blau-Weiss Hohen Neuendorf and SC Staaken saw Türkiyemspor advance to the final, where the Kreuzberg club faced Viktoria Berlin. In a thrilling final at Volkspark Mariendorf, Türkiyemspor showed nerves of steel and won 2:0.

Face to face

The 11:2 victory last weekend, in which the Eisernen were really strong, especially in the first half, leading 7:0 at the break, was the third win in a row for the Unionerinnen against Türkiyemspor. In total, the Eisernen have now won six out of eight meetings against their local rivals. Union’s last defeat came in the last 16 of the Polytan Cup. In the aforementioned 2021/22 cup season, at the end of which Türkiyemspor were crowned the winners, the Kreuzberg club beat Union 2:1.

Personnel

Head coach Ailien Poese will be without five players on Thursday: Luca Scheel, Elisa Schindler, Pauline Wimmer, Maria Cristina Lange and Anna Weiß.

Pre-match statements

“Türkiyemspor will have processed and analysed their impressions from the league game. We therefore expect a combative game. Cup games and especially evening matches under floodlights always have their own charm and require a very good focus. We’re looking forward to the game and have the clear goal of advancing to the next cup round,” explained head coach Ailien Poese about the clash on Thursday.

Service information

Kick-off against Türkiyemspor Berlin is at 19:30 on Thursday at the Käthe-Tucholla-Stadion in Bruno-Bürgel-Weg. Admission is free.
