1. FC Union Berlin head to Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday as Urs Fischer’s side look to build on a successful start to 2022.
Review – The Last Match:
Union are back in the quarter-final of the DFB Pokal after a two-year absence, beating Hertha Berlin 3-1 in their own backyard. A strike from Andreas Voglsammer gave Union a slender first-half advantage, while Niklas Stark’s own goal made it two early in the second half. Rani Khedira touched in an own goal from Suat Serdar’s effort, but Robin Knoche fired in the third to restore Union’s two-goal cushion at the Olympic Stadium. With 200 away supporters in attendance, the Köpenick will go into the draw for the last eight which takes place on Sunday January 30.
Gladbach – Opposition Report:
Adi Hütter’s Mönchengladbach team are under pressure to pick up results. The Foals went out of the Cup after a 0-3 loss to 2.Bundesliga side Hannover 96. Gladbach are 12th in the Bundesliga, but with just one win in their last seven matches. That said, their run hasn’t been plain sailing with games against Leverkusen, Hoffenheim and Bayern Munich – the only win in that run was a 2-1 victory at the Allianz Arena to start the second round of Bundesliga fixtures. Gladbach’s last win at Borussia-Park was a 4-0 drubbing of Greuther Fürth back in November. Hütter has strengthened his defensive options in the window with the signing of former Union vice-captain and central defender Marvin Friedrich.
Gladbach – The coach’s view:
Urs Fischer: “It’s firstly about us, showing our face, our game, the compactness and organisation. We did that really well against Hertha. It is a similar type of game for us as against Hertha. They want to play. They play in pressure situations and sometimes find solutions to those pressure situations. They have pace and they can take advantage of that.”
Personnel:
Taiwo Awoniyi is still in competition at the African Cup of Nations in Cameroon. Ricky van Drongelen tested negative and trained from yesterday. Pawel Wszolek trained from today. Laurenz Dehl passed some tests and can return to training. Andras Schäfer, who completed his move to Union today, has started running training, but has a small issue and will return to full training as soon as possible.
Service:
In line with the current restrictions in Nordrhein-Westfalen, 750 spectators will be permitted to see the match at Borussia-Park.
Kick-off is 15:30 CET.
