After two matches played in the Bundesliga, seven Union players will be travelling internationally with their national teams.
The nominees
András Schäfer will face his ‘favourite opponent’ in the Hungarian national jersey this week as he and his colleagues start their UEFA Nations League group A campaign against Germany, a regular opponent of the ‘Magyars’ at major tournaments in recent years. This will be followed up three days later, when the 1938 and 1954 World Cup runners-up face Bosnia, hoping to continue their run of four matches without defeat.

Defender Leopold Querfeld will return to international duty since being knocked out of the last 16 of the European Championship by Turkey. Under national coach Ralf Rangnick, his Austria side start UEFA Nations League B against Slovenia and Norway with the aim being to at least do better than in 2022, when they finished bottom of group A.

Like many of his older colleagues, Union’s youngest professional can also look forward to a national team call-up. Oluwaseun Ogbemudia has been summoned for the first time by Hanno Balitsch, head coach of Germany’s U-19s. After two appearances for the U-18s he is now hoping to get some game time against Italy and England. Both matches will take place as part of a training programme in Croatia.

Summer newcomer Tom Rothe has, meanwhile, been called up to the German U-20 national team. The 19-year-old has already made 17 appearances for various national youth teams and could make two more this September when the U-20s face Romania and Italy. Union’s home-grown talent Aljoscha Kemlein has also been nominated by U-20’s coach Hannes Wolf. The midfielder has already made eight appearances for the U-20’s under Wolf’s guidance and will take part in this DFB training programme together with Rothe.

László Bénes’ Slovakia will be on the road in the UEFA Nations League over the first weekend in September. The ‘Sokoli’ will face Estonia, Sweden and Azerbaijan in League C and will be looking to capitalise on the euphoria in the country ranked 44th in the FIFA World Ranking caused by a EUROs that only ended with their last-minute exit from the round of 16 against England.

Left-back Jérôme Roussillon has been nominated for the Guadeloupe national team. The side from the Caribbean archipelago will compete in the CONCAF Nations League B. In Group A, the competition begins with an away game in Costa Rica, followed by a home game against Suriname on the second matchday.
