After four months, Sebastian Bönig is ending his sabbatical and with immediate effect will take over the supporting role for the players on loan from 1. FC Union Berlin. He will be the first point of contact with Union’s players at other clubs and support in their development.

Bönig was assistant coach with Union’s men’s first team until November 2023, during which time he also acquired the highest coaching license, the UEFA Pro Level, in 2020.

“The time off the pitch has done me good,” said Bönig on his return to a club he knows so well. “Now I can focus on Union again and am able to make my contribution to the club’s success. I’m looking forward to the task of supporting the lads as best I can during their loan spells. In the long term, I also see myself back on the training pitch, but in the current situation I see a well-coordinated coaching team that I can better support in other ways.”

“We’re all very pleased about Böni’s return,” said Union’s director of men’s professional football, Oliver Ruhnert, meanwhile. “It shows that the club is very close to his heart and that he wants to continue to contribute to its success. Our loan players are also an important issue with regard to the coming season and we are sure that he is the right person for the job,” says Oliver Ruhnert.
