1. FC Union Berlin will not be entering their own team into the Virtual Bundesliga e-gaming competitions for the coming season. The view of the presidium is that participation does not correspond to the club’s statutory purpose, which is to cultivate and promote sport.
“E-gaming products and especially sports simulation games inspire many people and there is nothing wrong with that,” explained Union president, Dirk Zingler. “However, as a non-profit sports association, we consider it our task to promote the actual sport, not its digital simulation. We want to inspire young people to take part in sport and already reach thousands of Berlin’s children of nursery and primary school age every year with our sports promotion programmes. The need for support in this area is enormous, so we are concentrating on further expanding these programmes.”
