On Sunday, May 26, 2024, the women’s team of 1. FC Union Berlin will play the last away match of this season in the Regionalliga Nordost when they travel across the city to face Türkiyemspor on matchday 21.
The opponents
Türkiyemspor are currently in 6th place in the table with 29 points from 20 games and will therefore probably achieve their lowest finish in the Regionalliga Nordost. The club, who were promoted to the Regionalliga for the first time in 2020, finished second and third in their first two seasons, and for many were dark horses in the promotion race behind Union and Viktoria before the start of the season. Those hopes havn’t been realised and although the team from Kreuzberg overtook Hertha BSC on the last matchday, Türkiyemspor have not managed to have a say in the promotion race this time around.
The team of head coach Mehmet Bolat, who took over last summer, most recently recorded a 3-1 win at Bischofswerdaer FV. This was another success for Türkiyemspor after losing three games in a row, most notably 5-1 at 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam II and a 5-0 stuffing at home to Hertha BSC.
The team’s top scorer is Angelina Lübcke with nine goals for the season. The 33-year-old attacker has been particularly prolific in the 2024 calendar year, scoring seven of her nine goals in the second half of the season. Overall, Türkiyemspor have a very experienced squad. The captain is still 34-year-old Erika Szuh, who played 62 international matches for Hungary and has been the player-coach at Türkiyemspor for two years. Six other players are at least 30 years old. By comparison, Marie Becker is the oldest player at Union at 29, followed by Lisa Görsdorf (28) and Athanasia Moraitou (27).
The head to head
The clubs have already faced each other twice this season. In the first league fixture at Dörpfeldstraße, Union recorded a furious 11-2 victory, having led 7-0 at half time. Then, just four days later, the clubs met again in the last 16 of the Berlin Cup. Türkiyemspor showed a much improved performance and went into half-time goalless. In the second half, however, the Köpenickers prevailed 3-0.
The sides have met nine times so far with Union winning seven, while Türkiyemspor have won two.
The personnel
Head coach Ailien Poese will be without Maria Cristina Lange, Pauline Wimmer and Anna Weiß on Sunday due to injury.
The coach’s view ahead of the match
“We’re looking forward to the game against Türkiyemspor and expect an opponent who will defend well and show a lot of heart on the pitch,” was Ailien Poese’s assessment during midweek. “We want to keep pushing our possession and create chances and score goals from it.”
