Goalkeeper Berkin Arslanogullari, who has proudly worn the shirt of 1. FC Union Berlin since he was a child, is currently facing the hardest battle of his life, having received the shocking diagnosis of bone cancer a few months ago. Despite all efforts and intensive chemotherapy, the cancer could not be defeated so far, and as a life-saving measure, Berkin’s leg had to be recently amputated.
Even as a young boy, Berkin dreamed of one day running out in front of the Union fans at the Alte Försterei. He worked tirelessly his way through the youth teams at Union and was allowed to train with the professionals for the first time last season. One highlight of his career so far was being allowed to take the field in a firendly for the first team against Magdeburg – a moment he will remember forever.
Now, Berkin and his family are facing a new, enormous challenge. Due to the care and support necessary, it is no longer possible for his parents to go to work. The family’s current apartment has many barriers and is not set up for someone with a disability. A new apartment or extensive renovation works, alongside his upcoming rehabilitation are urgently needed for the new start in a new life and will lead to enormous costs.
Berkin and his family need the support and solidarity of the Union family now more than ever. A fundraising campaign has been set up to alleviate the financial burden a little and give Berkin the best possible chance of a future full of hope. Every contribution counts and helps to give Berkin a fresh start.
1. FC Union Berlin and the ‘UNION VEREINT. Schulter an Schulter’ foundation are making a financial contribution, and are asking the Unioners for support for the family.
Donate now and help give Berkin and his family new hope!
