VfB head coach Sebastian Hoeneß: “Union had the first big chance of the match. After that, we got into the game a bit more but we were a bit lax once or twice in our build-up play and gave Union a few more opportunities. After that, we took control and made it 1-0 with our second real chance. We had a few opportunities to increase our lead before the break but failed to take them.
“We didn’t start the second half very well and Union had a big chance, and we rode our luck a little bit. After that, we put in a mature performance. The only real gripe I would have is the last 20 minutes, when we could have been a bit more energetic and played a bit better. It’s important for me to underline the fact that we shouldn’t take victories for granted. They’re always something special and tonight’s was an important win.”
Nenad Bjelica, 1. FC Union Berlin head coach: “Congratulations to Stuttgart on their win. If you look purely at the chances created, it was an even match. Stuttgart had more control of the game but we had our opportunities – two of them, before they opened the scoring, but we didn’t take them. Our opponents made the most of their qualities and their chances as well. We’re struggling in front of goal at the moment but we’ll try to sort that out in the coming matches.”
