Guirassy opens the scoring

VfB began the match in customary fashion, going on the front foot right from the off and playing with pace and purpose towards Darmstadt’s goal. They were rewarded for their efforts in the 14th minute when Serhou Guirassy broke the deadlock with his 18th Bundesliga goal of the season.

Sebastian Hoeneß’s side subsequently eased off, however, allowing Darmstadt to battle their way back into the game. Pascal Stenzel was shown a second yellow card in first-half stoppage time (45’+22), leaving VfB to play the remainder of the match with 10 men.

Anton off the line

Darmstadt increased the pressure in the second half as they looked to make the most of their extra man. Waldemar Anton cleared a chance from Luca Pfeiffer off the line in the 59th minute, while at the other end of the pitch Woo Jeong hit the post with a long-range effort (88’).

Late goals

Mahmoud Dahoud put VfB 2-0 up in stoppage time (90’+2), and although Aaron Seydel reduced the deficit a short while later (90’+5), Hoeneß’s charges held on to earn a narrow victory.

Goals

14’: Following a corner, Anton tees up Guirassy, who heads the ball home from close range.

90’+2: Enzo Millot hits the post, with Dahoud mopping up the rebound to put VfB 2-0 ahead.

90’+5 Minute: Oscar Vilhelmsson passes to Seydel, who smashes the ball high into the roof of the net.
