VfB head coach Sebastian Hoeneß: “In the first 20 minutes, we set out our stall exactly the way we wanted to. The first goal we conceded came about all too easily, and then there was a passage of play where we really weren’t in control, and after that we were lucky to go in 1-1 at half-time. We came out well again after the break. The goal we then conceded was due to giving the ball away too easily. After that, we didn’t look good in the crucial part of the game, and we let it get away from us. At the end of the day, we can’t be happy with a performance like that. We need to learn to cope better with tough periods.”
Maximilian Mittelstädt: “We started off well in both the first and the second half, but Freiburg raised their level both times, played well and above all defended consistently. This was the kind of match that we can learn from. We know what our strengths are, and we can build on them.”
Julian Schuster, head coach of SC Freiburg: “We really didn’t get off to a good start, but that made the team’s reaction all the more pleasing. We needed to control the game when we were out of possession, rather than when we were on the ball, and we did. We’re really happy with the win against a very strong team that will also be a force to be reckoned with in Europe.”
