Eight members of the 1. FSV Mainz first team have been away representing their countries in EURO 2024 qualifiers and friendlies. Our international Zerofivers have now returned to Bruchweg, and have started preparations for the trip to RB Leipzig on Saturday (15:30 CEST).

Wins for Austria and Switzerland

Edimilson Fernandes and Silvan Widmer enjoyed two perfect wins with the Swiss national team. The ‘Nati’ beat Belarus 5-0 before a 3-0 win against Israel – Widmer completed the full 90 minutes in both matches, scoring his country’s third goal in their win over Israel. Fernandes was able to gain another cap as he came off the bench in the second fixture.

The Austrian national team also made a perfect start to EURO 2024 qualification, with six points from a possible six. Ralf Rangnick’s squad beat Azerbaijan 4-1 before a narrow 2-1 win against Estonia on Monday evening. FSV striker Karim Onisiwo was brought on for the final few minutes of the match against Estonia, and joined the celebrations as Michael Gregoritsch scored the winner.

Lee assistsa first goal of Klinsmann era

Marcus Ingvartsen and the Danish national team beat Finland 3-1 in their first EURO qualifier, before losing 3-2 to Kazakhstan – Mainz’s forward man did not get on the pitch. Andreas Hanche-Olsen also did not receive any minutes for Norway, as they lost 3-0 to Spain and drew 1-1 against Georgia.

Leandro Barreiro played the full 90 minutes in both of Luxembourg’s games in this international break, as they drew 0-0 away to Slovakia and lost 6-0 against Portugal. Jae-sung Lee played around 70 minutes of Jürgen Klinsmann’s debut as South Korea head coach against Colombia, setting up Heung-min Son’s opening goal in the 2-2 draw. He was also in the starting XI for their 2-1 defeat to Uruguay. Young first-teamer Nelson Weiper also played in both friendlies against France for Germany’s U18s.
