The Mainz players and staff were visibly elated after the stunning win over Bochum at the MEWA ARENA. Not only was it the first win of 2023 but it also put distance between FSV and the teams towards the foot of the table. Here is what Martin Schmidt, Bo Svensson, Karim Onisiwo and Ludovic Ajorque had to say after the game:

Reaction after #M05BOC:

Martin Schmidt: “I think we laid down the foundation with a concentrated and convincing first half performance. Bo put a team of fighters out on the pitch and you could see from line-up what it was all about today. That is exactly how we performed. My compliments go out to the team for how they handled the pressure relating to the table. Karim Onisiwo was unstoppable today, the team worked well together and it was a great performance all round. We are on a solid path to getting our way into the middle of the field.”

Bo Svensson: “The early goal showed that the boys really wanted it today. It probably wasn’t easy to process the last game mentally. It says a lot about the team that they approached the game like that and after the set-back against Dortmund, they rewarded themselves with a good win over an opponent that wasn’t to be taken lightly. This isn’t to be taken for granted and it speaks volumes about the mental strength of this team. The goal is to consistently play as we did in the last two games. If we keep keep playing like this then we will win games. That is our focus.”

Karim Onisiwo: “The game speaks volumes for the character of this team. But if we want to achieve more in the future then we need to be more stable and more consistent. We do it for two or three games then we go missing. We have to raise it to another level and call upon these performances, then we won’t let it slip. After I returned from injury it took me a while to get back into it. I was clinical today and I could’ve scored one or two more. I hope that this was the catalyst and that I can now push on.”

Ludovic Ajorque: “I’m delighted that I got to play from the beginning today. As a striker you always want to score goals but you will always look to find your team mate if they’re in a better position. I’m trying to get used to the way we play but my goal is to score in the next games.”
