Mainz take up option to buy Burgzorg

Delano Burgzorg is staying at the Zerofivers! 1. FSV Mainz 05 have taken up their option to buy the Dutch striker, who signed on loan from Heracles Almelo in the winter. Burgzorg has put pen to paper on a deal running until 2025. So far, he has played in three competitive games, scoring one goal for the club. The forward has been out recently due to myocarditis following a Covid infection. He is expected back in rehabilitation training soon after several months out.

“Delano has already shown his skills as a powerful centre forward. We want to help continue his development in the coming years and bring him to the next level. Even though this process has been halted by his myocarditis, we’re certain that he will kick on once completely recovering and our fans will be able to enjoy his football,” said sporting director Martin Schmidt.

Head coach Bo Svensson commented: “We brought in Delano in the winter with the view of building him up for the new season, but he already showed what he’s capable of earlier this year. He’s the type of guy that we didn’t have in our squad – a quick and direct player that likes to take people on, plus he can play out wide too. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with myocarditis after having Covid, however he’s back on the road to recovery and we’re already planning his comeback so that he can reach his full potential with us next season.”
