1. FSV Mainz 05 are delighted to announce the signing of Norwegian centre-back Andreas Hanche-Olsen from KAA Gent. The 25-year-old defender made 107 appearances for the Belgian side after arriving at the club in 2020 and featured 21 times in the Europa League and Conference League. Hanche-Olsen also has experience on the international stage, having made 14 appearances for the Norway national team. The Norwegian will train for the first time with his new teammates on Friday morning. Further details of the transfer will remain undisclosed.

Bo Svensson and Martin Schmidt on the new arrival

“We have been watching Andreas Hanche-Olsen for quite some time. We already made serious considerations about him in the summer, so it’s even nicer that we have managed to finalise the transfer in January. Andreas can help us straight away with his strength and stamina and also his experience, but he is also a player for Mainz 05 in the future,” explained Martin Schmidt.

His profile from both a sporting perspective as well as in his personality fits our team brilliantly

Zerofivers head coach Bo Svensson explained: “With Andreas Hanche-Olsen, we are once again in the fortunate position to be able to sign a player that we absolutely always wanted and that also truly wants to join Mainz 05. He is a Norway international at a peak age, physically strong and quick – a centre-back who absolutely defines himself by how he defends his own goal. Andreas is also a leader; he took on the role of Norway captain from a young age and will bring a great mentality with him. His profile from both a sporting perspective as well as in his personality fits our team brilliantly.

The defender has made 14 appearances for the Norway national team.

The club has everything that attracts me to football

Andreas Hanche-Olsen explained: “It was my goal and dream to play in the Bundesliga. The switch to Mainz is the perfect next step for me as the club has everything that attracts me to football: high levels of intensity, a unique style of football and a passionate fanbase. I’m excited to get to know everything and looking forward to becoming a part of this team.”
