Mainz 05 drew 2-2 with RCD Mallorca at the Estadi Son Biblioni on Saturday afternoon in their final training camp friendly in Spain. Amath Ndiaye opened the scoring for the hosts in the first minute, before Aymen Barkok netted an equaliser from the spot for the Zerofivers in the 20th minute. The hosts were then awarded a penalty just before the break, with Vedat Muriqi restoring their lead (39’). After the break, it was Danny da Costa who brought Mainz level once again (53’). “I was pleased with what I saw from my team, and the intensity was good. We fought back after going being on Wednesday already, and did well once again today,” said head coach Bo Svensson. “The game had plenty to offer, both in terms of the football we saw and the physicality. It was fun.”
Special moment at kick-off and an early goal
Miguel Garriga, who played for Mainz from 1961 to 1966, conducted the ceremonial kick-off ahead of the friendly. It didn’t take long for the first goal to fall, with Ndiaye picking off a pass from centre-back Niklas Tauer before beating Finn Dahmen one-on-one to score (1’).
Penalties for both teams
The next chance also belonged to the hosts, as Dahmen was forced to leap to claw the ball away from the top corner, after Leandro Barreiro redirected a free-kick towards goal (10’). The first shot on target from the Zerofivers came from Barkok, who let loose a shot from 16 metres out (12’). After Ben Bobzien was brought down in the box by RCD captain Antonio Raillo, it was Barkok who stepped up to cooly convert the penalty (20’). Just five minutes later, Fulgini came close to putting FSV ahead, but his long-range shot sailed just over the bar.
Despite a good phase of play from the Zerofivers, it was Mallorca who would take the lead once again. Referee Miguel Domato pointed to the spot after Barreiro fouled Raillo, with Muriqi putting his spot-kick past Dahmen (39’). The final chance of the first half belonged to the Zerofivers, but Barkok’s shot was caught by goalkeeper Dominik Greif (41’).
Da Costa nets the equaliser
Mainz started well after the change of ends, with their early pressure paying off. Delano Burgzorg won the ball inside the RCD box, before laying it off to Eniss Shabani. He poked it through to da Costa, who slotted home from a tight angle to draw level again (53’). RCD head coach Javier Aguirre had made wholesale changes to his side at half-time, as their intensity lagged in the second half.
Against an RCD side who currently sit in 11th place in La Liga, Mainz did well to mount attacks in the final third and remained solid in defence. Anton Stach attempted two long-range shots, but both sailed over the bar (63’, 73’). Shabani was also able to get off a shot after a miscommunication at the back from RCD, but it was blocked (80’). The final chance of the game went to the hosts, but Angel Rodriguez was unable to make the most of it, as the match ended in a 2-2 draw. “We did a lot of things right today,” Svensson commented, “It was an evenly-matched game, which is a good indicator for us.”
