Head coach Bo Svensson was visibly satisfied with what he saw from his team on the third day of training camp in Marbella. On Thursday, the team worked intensely out on the pitch before moving into the gym in the afternoon. Not once has Svensson needed to remind his team to stay focused on the task at hand. “The lads are fully on board and are doing what we are demanding of them,” he said, leaving him with a positive impression so far.
After four challenging sessions, the team will now have a rest day in order to help manage their workload. “Tomorrow will be more of a recovery half day, before the second half gets underway,” said Svensson. The closing phase of training camp will continue to be intense, with a friendly against FC Luzern on Tuesday, 10th January (2×60 minutes, 15:00 CET). The aim is for the team to become a well-rehearsed unit ahead of the return to competitive action in the Bundesliga on 21st January and the DFB-Pokal. “Being consistent in every game. That’s where we see room for improvement, because we have had a lot of slip-ups,” the coach said. “It’s not good enough to be at this level for a couple of days. We need to demonstrate it all week.”
Progress made by Leitsch & Stach
Svensson was also pleased to see that Maxim Leitsch and Anton Stach, who are both completing individual programs in Marbella, have made good progress. According to the coach, Leitsch is “on a good path back.” The centre-back has been unavailable since October due to mental and physical exhaustion. “He’s doing more than we had envisioned now, is enjoying being with the team and is having fun playing football,” Svensson said. On a physical level, Leitsch is still not ready to participate in the taxing training sessions. “He still has a way to go in terms of his physical condition, but it won’t be long before he will be able to complete the full team training again. Overall, he’s doing well. We’re not in constant contact, but sometimes you don’t need to be in order to se that he’s doing well. Based on his body language and the way he’s acting, it all looks good,” said the Dane. Stach, meanwhile, had broken his toe during an earlier training camp in a friendly against RCD Mallorca and has been able to complete some intensive runs in Marbella. “He’s now moving onto the next steps of working with the ball, jumping, changes of direction, sprints and football-specific workouts,” said Svensson.
On Saturday, the team will take part in a recovery session in the morning. After eating lunch together, they will have the afternoon off in order to rest up for the remainder of training camp.
