Day 2 of the winter training camp in Marbella: After the short exercise and familiarisation session in the late evening of the day of arrival, Bo Svensson asked his squad for two longer training sessions on Thursday with a clear goal in. mind: to quickly recall and internalise the processes and principles of their own game at a high level. “Good power” echoed across from a satisfied Svensson at the Marbella Football Centre during the morning training session. “That was very good,” said the Dane, whose team also pulled through in the afternoon and rounded off the first full day in Andalusia on a positive note.
Thursday had begun with the news that Jonathan Burkardt would not be joining the team in Spain. The attacker is staying in Munich to undergo further rehabilitation measures for his knee and will rejoin the squad next week in Mainz. His teammates paid good attention in the morning video session and brought to the pitch exactly that which the Zerofiver coaching team and Svensson wanted to see: “It was not a short session and yet there was the quality that we want to see right until the end. There was no reason to be dissatisfied,” the FSV head coach said, pleased with the commitment of his players. Defensive was the focus of the day in an initially narrow pitch, which became larger from game form to game form. The coaches demanded pressing, counter-pressing, high defending, intensive tackling and duels out of their players, but also getting out of tight situations with the ball. These exercises were also the focus of the second session, this time first on a larger pitch and then in tournament form in a 6-vs-6 match.
Consistency in defense
Svensson wants to make the most of the time with his team in the training camp so that, among other things, their consistency in defence will be “a touch better” in the second half of the season. “We have already had games where we put on very good performances. The away game in Bremen or the home games against Leipzig and also against Wolfsburg spring to mind. But there were also too many outliers in the other direction.”
They are trying to get back into the routine as quickly as possible and improve the aspects in which they have potential for growth. “The days here are very important for that because we don’t have that much time overall before the first game,” the Mainz head coach stressed. While the “Day of the Three Kings” is celebrated in Spain tomorrow, Friday, the Zerofivers have another busy day ahead of them with two more training sessions.
