Jonathan Burkardt will not travel to the first team training camp taking place in Marbella – here is how the week is shaping up. The 22-year-old has been undergoing rehab in Munich and will join up with the team again in Mainz in the coming weeks. “This is what makes the most sense and what he would like to do. The doctor there has known him since he was younger and will be working in close co-operation with him individually while we [the team] are in Marbella,” said Bo Svensson on Thursday after the morning’s training session.
Burkardt stayed in Munich in order to check-up on his knee operation. “We received feedback that everything looks good with the operation but physically his capability is still limited slightly. With a procedure like this, you lose some strength in the area around the knee, which has to be built up again,” said Svensson. The Mainz youth-product has continued to struggle with injury setbacks through the season up until now, “so that he has not got into a rhythm. That is a shame for Jonny but also for us, because we all saw last season what we is able to do if he is able to play and train continually.”
He will find his level again
Nevertheless, the Mainz head coach was looking positively at the future: “He will find his level again.” Svensson also knows that the club and the player need time and to be patient. “In order to reach his level again he needs training intensity and to put his body under physical stress again.”
