Mainz are travelling to the capital on Saturday afternoon to face FC Union (15:30 CET). Both sides were in cup action in the week and whilst FSV were knocked out to Bayern, the Berliners progressed to the quarterfinals after a 2-1 win over Wolfsburg. The Zerofivers are yet to win a Bundesliga game at the Alte Försterei but they are hoping it will be fourth time lucky on Saturday.

Stats and facts

Looking to level it out

Mainz have currently lost more games than they have won in the league this season (W6, L7). They will be looking to balance it out at the weekend with a win in Berlin.

Mid-table consolidated

Mainz ended their run of six games without a win with the 5-2 victory over Bochum last weekend. It was an important result against VfL as it kept the Zerofivers well clear of the teams towards the foot of the table.

An intense game is on the cards

Mainz and FCU are two of the teams that cover the most distance in the Bundesliga. Union cover an average of 117.5km per game (2nd highest), whereas Mainz cover an average of 115.8km (4th highest).

Ingvartsen against his former club

Marcus Ingvartsen made the move from Union to Mainz in the summer of 2021. He has scored for both clubs in this fixture.

Union vulnerable from corners

FCU have conceded five goals from corners this season- the most of any side in the league. Mainz will be looking to exploit this weakness with their aerial prowess.

A tough place to visit

Urs Fischer’s side are 14 Bundesliga games unbeaten at Alte Försterei. Bayern, Leipzig and Union are the only sides to have not lost at home this season.

Onisiwo’s stand-out performance

Onisiwo played a blinder against VfL Bochum last weekend. Not only did he bag his first Bundesliga hat-trick, he also made 36 sprints and covered a distance of 11km. Mainz have also won every game that Onisiwo has scored in this season.

Quaison’s record within reach

Karim Onisiwo is now Mainz’s second most prolific goal scorer in the Bundesliga (29 goals). He is now only two behind the current record holder, Robin Quaison.

Voronin brace in the last away win

Mainz haven’t won at Union for over 20 years. Their last win at the Alte Försterei came during the 2002/03 season, when Andriy Voronin scored a brace in a 2-0 win.

Hot on Bayern’s heels

FC Union are just one point behind Bayern in the Bundesliga table. Their eleven wins this season is the joint-most of any side.

Officials

Florian Badstübner will be in charge of the contest. Markus Schüller and Philipp Hüwe will run the line and Florian Exner will be the fourth official.
