24 Mainz players (including three goalkeepers) travelled to Mallorca on Monday morning for the first of two winter training camps. Leandro Barreiro, who was on an extended break due to his involvement with the Luxembourg national team and subsequently missed last week’s sessions, travelled with the team and will rejoin training this week. The five youth talents: Lucas Laux, Kaito Mizuta, Timothé Rupil, David Mamutovic and Brajan Gruda, will also be present at the camp.
Maxim Leitsch (fatigue), Marlon Mustapha (rehabilitation training after injury) Silvan Widmer (international duty), Edimilson Fernandes (international duty) and Jae-Sung Lee are also absent from the training camp.
Jonny Burkardt also didn’t travel and will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his knee in Munich on Monday. The aim of the surgery is to accelerate Jonny’s return to the pitch. The striker suffered a distortion of the knee joint in the final home game of the year against Eintracht Frankfurt on 13th November 2022. Burkardt is expected to return to team training at the beginning of January.
