BORUSSIA M’GLADBACH ANALYSIS

The big dream

Borussia started the season last summer with a new head coach: Gerardo Seoane who took over from Daniel Farke. Under Seoane’s guidance, the Fohlenelf have been languishing in the middle of the table for several months and have collected 22 points from 21 Bundesliga games so far. Gladbach will arrive in Leipzig 13th in the Bundesliga.

When looking at their results you see a team often involved in high-scoring games. Borussia’s 36 goals scored are the seventh best and their 41 goals conceded are the second worst in the Bundesliga.

Outcome delayed

While there are many signs that point to a somewhat quieter season in league play, Borussia’s dream of reaching the DFB Pokal final in Berlin is still alive. Since the quarter-final game at 1. FC Saarbrücken had to be postponed due to heavy rain, the outcome as to which club will face 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the semi-finals will not be made until mid-March when the teams face off. (March 12, 8:30 p.m.).

Change in goal

The season started with a shock for Mönchengladbach: starting keeper and captain Jonas Omlin seriously injured his shoulder in August 2023 and has been unavailable since.

His replacement was probably not known to many Bundesliga fans, but that would quickly change. Moritz Nicolas took over on Matchday 3. The 26-year-old has impressed with strong saves in his 19 Bundesliga games and has had three clean sheets.

Borussia Fan Favorite

Another regular starter is Rocco Reitz . TACTICS

Gerardo Seoane (45) has been the head coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach since the start of the season. Under the Swiss coach, the Fohlenelf have achieved a points average of 1.05 in the Bundesliga this season.

Seoane expects a “tough task” for the away game in Leipzig, as he explained on Thursday at the press conference before the match. After some spectacular but not entirely satisfactory results at the start of the season, such as 4:4 in Augsburg , 3:3 in Darmstadt or 3:3 in Freiburg, Seoane recently fielded more defensive-minded players and chose the tactical system of a three-man defence/ back five.

“I think we’ve made improvements in defence. We’ve been much more stable lately. The offense may have suffered a bit because of that,” said Gladbach’s head coach. In the last three games, Borussia have scored one goal (3-1 loss in Munich ), and their matches against Leverkusen and Darmstadt ended 0-0.
