Good things come to those who wait
RB Leipzig had been interested in Lutsharel Geertruida for quite some time, and shortly before the end of the summer transfer period the Dutchman moved to Cottaweg.
The 24-year-old, who can defend both on the right and in the center, and can even help out as a holding midfielder, signed a contract with RBL that runs until 2029.
Here’s everything you need to know about our number 3.
Good to know | Lutsharel Geertruida
- Lutsharel is the 9th player to wear RB Leipzig’s number 3.
The other eight number 3’s were:
- Christopher Lenz
- Angelino
- Marcelo Saracchi
- Bernardo
- Anthony Jung
- Tomasz Wisio
- Roman Jaworski
- Frank Räbsch
- He is the 7th Dutchman to wear the RB Leipzig jersey. Xavi is currently the other player from the Netherlands in the team. The two have been friends for many years.
- His nickname is “Lutsha”, which has already got around among his teammates, leading to a drawn-out “Luuutshaa” shouted across the training grounds more often than not.
- Lutsharel is a proper Rotterdam native, as he was born in Rotterdam, learned to play football there and eventually became a professional at Feyenoord. RB Leipzig is therefore only his second stop as a professional footballer.
- His rise to captain: Since his debut for Feyenoord in October 2017, Lutsharel has taken on a more important role in the team every year. In the previous season he had already worn the captain’s armband several times. Before moving to Leipzig he was the club’s first captain.
- For a defender, Lutsharel is extremely dangerous in front of goal. In the 2023/24 season, he scored nine goals and provided five assists in 47 competitive matches.
- He has already won five titles in the Netherlands: The League in 2023, the Cup in 2018 and 2024 and the Supercup in 2018 and 2024.
- When he wins a title, Lutsharel likes to show off his singing and beatboxing skills. Will we soon hear him singing in Leipzig?
