ForTomorrow uses the donations it collects to buy and decommission CO₂ emission rights. To that end, ForTomorrow uses the official climate protection tool of the European Union: the EU Emissions Trading Scheme. This works in a similar way to the stock exchange, with all major CO₂ emitters (e.g. coal-fired power plants) obliged to participate. If they want to emit CO₂, they have to purchase emission rights. The emission rights are auctioned by the state and can then be freely traded.

The average price in 2023 was €85.40 per ton of CO₂ (plus VAT). This means: for 99 ticket donations of €1 each, we can decommission one ton of CO₂. One ton of CO₂ is roughly equivalent to the consumption of a passenger flight from Germany to New York.

Why is climate protection important in the football world?

Professional football has a high CO₂ footprint. The lion’s share of this is caused by teams, staff and fans travelling. But also by consumption at the stadium: More than 7,500 tons of CO₂ are produced by fans alone on a single Bundesliga weekend. That is roughly equivalent to the total annual consumption of 700 average German citizens – multiplied by 34 matchdays. In order be sustainable and climate-friendly, clubs and fans need to pull together. Offsetting CO₂ that cannot be avoided is a way of contributing to this goal.

Make your next ticket a contribution to the climate. Every ton counts!
