Goalkeeper from the academy
Urbig extends and loaned to Fürth
1. FC Köln have extended Jonas Urbig’s contract until 30th June 2026. The club have also agreed on a loan move to SpVgg Greuther Fürth for the 19-year-old German youth international, in order for Urbig to gain playing time at a high level.
FC have a lot of trust in goalkeeping talent, Jonas Urbig and have therefore extended his contract. The 19-year-old comes from the FC-academy and has been with FC since the under-10s. As part of the under-17s, Urbig was part of the side that were crowned German champions in 2019 and he was a part of head coach Steffen Baumgart’s squad in the previous campaign.
Part of Jonas Urbig’s development plan is to give the goalkeeping talent as much game time as possible at the highest level. During the Winter Break, FC loaned out Urbig to Jahn Regensburg. The Euskirchen-born goalkeeper was immediately first-choice goalkeeper and featured in all 17 games of the Rückrunde. Unfortunately, he was unable to prevent relegation to the third tier but was voted by the fans as Player of the Season.
With relegation came the end of the 18-month loan that was originally planned with Jahn Regensburg. In order for Urbig to gain game time at a high level, a new loan move has been agreed upon for the upcoming season – this time with SpVgg Greuther Fürth.
FC Managing Director, Christian Keller said: “Jonas Urbig has a complete profile for a modern goalkeeper at to potentially play at a high level. What is particularly notable, alongside the sporting factors and also taking into account how young he is, is his maturity and absolute professionalism. Therefore, we want to and will intensively promote and push him to aid his development and bring him to the Bundesliga-level for the future. For that reason, the loan to Fürth is a very important step. The same applies to the extension of his contract.”
Jonas Urbig said: “I am very pleased to have extended my contract at FC and am thankful for the trust of the entire club. The extension in combination with the opportunity to continue getting game time in 2. Bundesliga is the ideal path for me at the moment. I was able to learn a lot in my time at SSV Jahn Regensburg and could gain a lot of important experience. To start a young goalkeeper in a difficult sporting situation is not a given and I appreciate that a lot. My aim was to repay that trust with 100% effort and the best possible performance whilst under pressure and in front of many fans. I will take this experience to Fürth and want to work hard to get my game time there next season, in order to take the next step in my development.”
Urbig will join Tim Lemperle at Greuther Fürth, who is also on loan at the Franconian side.
