Scally: “I’m living my dream here”

After signing his contract extension, defender Joe Scally discusses the reasons for his contract extension, his time at Borussia so far and his goals for the future.

Joe, you’ve just signed a contract extension with Borussia until 2027. What are the reasons behind your decision?

Scally: I’m a young player and the most important thing for me is to be playing regularly. Borussia gives me the opportunity to do exactly that and develop as a player. Speaking to the club, they described a clear plan of how they see things developing for us going forward. I’m pleased to continue this journey alongside Borussia.

You came to Mönchengladbach from USA as an 18-year-old and quickly established yourself as a regular in the side. What do you think of that time?

Scally: I’m really living my dream. Everything that the club said to me beforehand has come true. I’d never have thought that I’d be such an important part of the team at such a young age. It means a lot to me and was also one of the reasons why I extended my contract.

When you look back to the day that you moved to Germany, what do you remember and how do you feel now?

Scally: I remember being at the airport as an 18-year-old with six big suitcases during the coronavirus pandemic, saying goodbye to my family. That was the worst feeling and to date, the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life. But everyone here at Borussia welcomed me warmly from the first day, which made it really easy to settle in. Since then I’ve made good friends here and feel really at home in the area.

What goals did you have for yourself as a Borussia player?

Scally: Personally, I want to play as many games as possible and in doing so continue my positive development as a player. With the team, I’d like to qualify for European football again; it’s something that the club and the fans deserve. I want to play my part in making sure the club achieves that.

How would your first goal at BORUSSIA-PARK feel?

Scally: That’s definitely another goal of mine (laughs). Hopefully the wait doesn’t go on too much longer. Obviously I’ve managed to score away, so now it’s about time for a goal in front of our home fans.

After conceding quite a lot of goals recently, the team have only conceded one in the past three games. Why are things going better defensively?

Scally: We’ve been working hard to improve at the back. Teams are currently finding it a lot harder to score against us. We also have a really good goalkeeper who gives us defenders confidence. I hope that continues and we can pick up as many points as possible from the remaining six games.

A home game against Union Berlin awaits on Sunday. What makes your upcoming opponents strong and how do you have to approach the game in order to get all three points?

Scally: Union are a very physical side who are very compact. It won’t be easy to find the gaps and score goals. They also have a lot of players who are good on the counter attack. We have to build on our good defensive performances in recent games and take our chances in front of goal – then we have a good chance of winning.

Joe Scally scored his first Bundesliga goal in the 3-1 away win over Wolfsburg.
