Moritz Nicolas extends Borussia contract until 2029

Borussia have extended goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas’ contract, which was originally set to expire on 30th June 2026, by three further years until 30th June 2029.

“Mo has repaid the trust we’ve put in him with superb performances, so he’s fully deserved this long-term contract extension,” said Borussia’s managing director for sport Roland Virkus. “We’re very pleased to be so well-stocked in the goalkeeper position.”

Nicolas moved to Mönchengladbach from Rot-Weiss Essen in 2015. After ten league games for the Foals’ U19s, the netminder featured 75 times for the U23s in the Regionalliga West. He then spent time out on loan at Union Berlin (2019/20, one Bundesliga game), VfL Osnabrück (2020/21, one 2. Bundesliga game) and Viktoria Köln (2021/22, 31 3. Liga games). Nicolas briefly returned to Mönchengladbach at the start of the 2022/23 season and made his competitive debut for the Foals in a 9-1 DFB-Pokal first-round win at SV Oberachern.

Shortly afterwards, he joined Dutch second-division side Roda JC on loan until the end of the season, where he appeared in 30 league games. In summer 2023, Nicolas returned to Borussia, and this time stayed put. He began the current season as the number two, but has started every Bundesliga game for the Foals since Matchday 3 following the injury to Jonas Omlin. He has shown himself to be a reliable presence for his side between the sticks in his 22 Bundesliga and two DFB-Pokal games so far this season.

Interview with Moritz Nicolas

Mo, what made you decide to extend your contract with Borussia?

Nicolas: I feel right at home here, and am therefore thrilled to extend my contract and secure my future with the club.

You made your Bundesliga debut with Gladbach this season, and now you’ve made an appearance in 22 league matches. How happy are you to be officially one of the Foals?

Nicolas: Going out on loan was important for me to gather experience and get minutes on the pitch. I always wanted to come back to Borussia at some point in my career – it was always in the back of my mind. For that reason, I’m really pleased to be back. I feel like I’ve found where I’m meant to be this year.

Head coach Gerardo Seoane has praised your development on multiple occasions over the past few weeks. How do you personally feel about the progress you’ve made?

Nicolas: I certainly didn’t expect to have made so many Bundesliga appearances by March this year. I’ve learnt a lot over the season so far. I made a lot of progress in training, but also during games. I want to keep working hard towards getting more minutes on the pitch and improving my own personal performance.

You’re set to play between the sticks in the Rhine Derby at BORUSSIA-PARK on Saturday. How excited are you, and what are you expecting the game to be like?

Nicolas: It’s a very special game for us, which we’re all insanely excited for. We’re aiming to play a lot better than we did on Matchday 8, be aggressive in our tackles, fully embrace the whole experience of the derby, and hopefully come away from it with all three points.
