Fabian Otte to leave Borussia at the end of the season
Goalkeeping coach Fabian Otte will leave Borussia at the end of the 2023/24 season in order to work full-time as Head of Goalkeeping for the U.S. Soccer Federation.
“Fabian has already been working as the USA’s goalkeeping coach during the international breaks since September. He’s now received the offer to work full-time for the U.S. Soccer Federation. This is a big opportunity for him,” Roland Virkus, Borussia’s sporting director, said. “Admittedly, we would’ve liked to continue working with Fabi, but we also understand that he’d like to seize this opportunity – even though this decision wasn’t easy for him. Fabi has done an outstanding job in the past two and a half years and we’re absolutely sure that he’ll continue to fulfil his role with full commitment until the end of the season. We’ve always communicated well with Fabian. He informed us about his plans at an early stage. Accordingly, we’ve been looking into finding a successor for a long time and have had some good conversations.”
Fabian Otte joined Borussia from English Premier League side Burnley FC in 2021. Beforehand, the 33-year-old was the goalkeeping coach for TSG Hoffenheim’s U23s (2018-2020) and for the New Zealand Women’s national team (2017-2018).
“The move in the summer is a decision based on a new challenge, and it’s not only of interest due to the 2026 World Cup, which the USA is hosting alongside Canada and Mexico, but also particularly due to the Copa América this summer. It’s nothing against Borussia,” Otte said. “I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity I received here and for the chance to continue developing as a goalkeeping coach at the highest level. I’ll enjoy every day I’ve got left here.”
