#BMGBOC: match reaction

Here’s what Florian Neuhaus, Nathan Ngoumou, Julian Weigl and Gerardo Seoane, as well as Bochum head coach Thomas Letsch, had to say after the Foals’ 5-2 win on Saturday afternoon.

Florian Neuhaus: It was an important win for us. We played with a lot of energy and did a lot of things right. I think that, at the end of the day, we deserved to win. We know how Bochum like to play and we did an in-depth analysis of their match against Bayern. Bochum’s style of play is well-established, so we wanted to show some fight. I, personally, also wanted to show what I can do today. I wanted to bring my A game and I think I managed to. We want to make life hard for the opposition, especially when we’re playing at home with the fans behind us.

Nathan Ngoumou: I’m very happy with the win and thankful for the faith that the coach placed in me. I think that I showed what I can do going forward. Of course, I’m happy that I scored and that I was involved at key moments. Overall, we did what the coach told us to do over the course of the game. During the match, we noticed that it was working. We’ve got more important games coming up over the next few weeks. We’ve got to ensure that we do the same as we did today in those matches and really dig in.

Julian Weigl: I saw a team where everyone was fighting for one another in a game where we were under constant pressure. We made some errors, but we showed passion, played good football and felt more and more confident with every goal we scored. When all’s said and done, we deserved to win. It was a match that proved that there’s life in this team and that we’re sticking together.

Head coach Gerardo Seoane: It was a real emotional rollercoaster with a lot of goals. We didn’t get off to the best start. We were then more direct going forward, created a lot of clear-cut chances and defended very well. I’m happy that we were able to put in such a good performance for the entire 90 minutes. We continued to play attacking-minded football until the final whistle and weren’t fazed when we conceded. I’m also thrilled that we had five different goal scorers today. It was especially great to see Stevie Lainer get his first full 90 following his absence, and he put in a strong performance to top it off.

Head coach Thomas Letsch (VfL Bochum): We started really well, and approached the game as we had planned. After we scored our opener, which was disallowed, we won the ball back on many occasions and had a good number of clear-cut chances. However, the opposition started to pile on the pressure and we kept giving the ball away easily. In these phases of the game, Gladbach were the better team and scored their opener after a nice set-piece routine. We allowed them too much time on the ball, so we really didn’t have a great first half. We set our sights high after the break, but instead of getting one back, we conceded the third goal and things got crazy. We still kept the faith after that, but it wasn’t enough to come away with any points. Borussia deserved to win today.
