We gathered the thoughts from the coaches, players and sporting director Roland Virkus following Borussia’s 2-0 win over VfL Bochum on Saturday afternoon.

Julian Weigl: It was really important to get the win, also for the fans who wanted to see a reaction from us. We didn’t produce the performance we expect from ourselves against Stuttgart. We wanted to deliver a response, and I think we managed that. We fought for each other out there. The 15 minutes after half time were tricky, but we came back well. We could have made it easier for ourselves if we had taken our chances earlier in the game though. We now have two difficult away matches, but we will go into them with the same mentality that we showed today and then we will grow in confidence.

Jonas Hofmann: I thought that we were really good defensively. It felt like Bochum play every ball long, so you have to keep your focus and be ready for the second ball. Not everything was perfect, which is why they had the odd chance, but we did a great job for the most part and so I think we deserved to win.

Roland Virkus: The team played with passion and deserved their win. Bochum had to take more risks in the second half, and there was a period where we had to just show resistance and get through it. But we ought to have wrapped up the game earlier after that. The fans showed incredible support today and we maintained our focus until the last minute. We knew that Bochum like to make use of long balls, throw-ins and set-pieces – there’s always the chance that something will drop for them. The lads defended well though. We want to take each game as it comes, just like today, so that we can end the season with a positive feeling.

Daniel Farke: The win does us good, not just in terms of the table, but also for our confidence and the team spirit. We had to deliver after the games against Union and Stuttgart, particularly going forward. We produced a lot more sprints and runs in deep and looked a lot better in attack. We needed 20 minutes to get going in the first half, but we grew into the game and scored a great goal. We let a number of chances go begging after that though. Bochum threw everything at us in the second half, and it was important to keep them at bay. All in all, I’m very happy, even if we should have scored a goal or two more. The most pleasing thing is that we kept a clean sheet again.

VfL Bochum head coach Thomas Letsch: Regardless of the result, I’m annoyed with our performance in the last 20 minutes of the first half. It was an even and fairly uneventful game until then. We hadn’t given much away, but we also hadn’t created much ourselves. Then we gave our opponents confidence through a mistake, which led to the atmosphere picking up in the stadium and eventually their goal. That was when we let the game get away from us. We put them under pressure in the second half, but we didn’t take our chances. We just didn’t do enough today. We didn’t deliver the performance that was needed to come away with a result.
