Despite leading twice and clearly dominating (20-10 shots, 63% possession and a 61% tackle win rate), Borussia Dortmund missed out on a win in the Ruhr derby. The match facts.

First: For the first time this Bundesliga season, a BVB away game has ended in a draw.

Not a first: The 100th Bundesliga derby saw Schalke and Dortmund share the points for the 31st time. Both teams have drawn more Bundesliga games against each other than any other club.

Attacking prowess: No team has scored as many goals since the winter break as BVB (24), who have not failed to find the net in the league in 2023 and have scored at least two goals in eight of their nine games.

Strong performance: Raphael Guerreiro, who played in central midfield today, set up the goal for 1-0 and made it 2-1 himself. He was also enormously hard-working and covered 12.48 kilometres – the most of any player on the pitch.

Favourite foe: Raphael Guerreiro has scored five derby goals; the Portuguese has not scored against any other club so often. Historically, only three players have scored more for BVB against Schalke: Lothar Emmerich (10 goals), Michael Zorc (7) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (6).

From range: BVB scored a goal from distance for the 12th time this season, with seven of them coming since the winter break.

Attacking defender: No defender has racked up more scorer points than Nico Schlotterbeck (four goals, four assists).

Experience: Despite a similar average age – 26.8 years for Schalke and 26.5 years for Dortmund – the 11 Black & Yellows had played more than twice as many Bundesliga games (1203) than the Schalke starting XI (505), who between them had only managed 15 goals (the tally for Borussia was 135, even without Reus or Brandt).
