An outstanding first 45 minutes was enough for BVB to secure a deserved (margin of) victory in the battle of the Borussias. The shot count stood at 32-13, the xG value at 5.54-1.9. Terzic’s team really took their opponents apart before the break, with Donyell Malen and Sebastien Haller in particular proving to be virtually unstoppable. The match facts.
Highest xG value: BVB achieved the highest XG value of any team this season when they faced Wolfsburg last week (5.0) – but bettered that only six days later with an xG of 5.54.
Many shots at goal: Only one team has registered more shots in a game this season than Borussia Dortmund, who fired 32 attempts at the Borussia Mönchengladbach goal. The last time BVB had so many shots at goal in a Bundesliga game was over nine and a half years ago (a 6-2 victory against HSV in September 2013).
Historic tally of home wins: The Black & Yellows racked up their 14th home win of this Bundesliga campaign. BVB have never claimed this many victories at their own stadium in a season – and they still have one home game to go against Mainz. The last 11 home games have all ended in victory. BVB have never before put together such a long winning streak on their own patch within one season.
Goals glut continues: Borussia Dortmund have scored at least one goal for the 51st Bundesliga home game in a row and extended the club record in the process. Only FC Bayern have bettered that run – on three occasions.
The outstanding Haller: Sebastien Haller initiated the first two goals and then scored the other two himself; the forward registered more shots at goal (six) in the first half than the entire VfL team (five). He has now been involved in 10 goals in his 17 appearances this season (seven goals and three assists). He had previously scored two goals in one game against Cologne. In total, this was his fourth brace in the Bundesliga (two each for Dortmund and Frankfurt).
Best attack: BVB have scored 53 goals after the winter break – 13 goals more than any other team. There are five Dortmund players among the top seven scorers after the winter break: Haller, Brandt, Adeyemi, Guerreiro and No. 1 Donyell Malen, who has 13 goal involvements.
Malen in top-form: Donyell Malen has been involved in 12 goals in his last 11 appearances (nine goals and three assists). He has scored each of his nine goals this season since the winter break. No player has scored more frequently in 2023 (Ducksch and Kolo Muani also have nine each).
Bellingham’s goal threat: Jude Bellingham scored his eighth goal of the season, which is more than double his tally in his first two Bundesliga seasons. The Englishman already converted a penalty in a BVB shirt in the DFB-Pokal; today he stepped up for the first time in the Bundesliga and was slightly lucky to score.
Super sub: Giovanni Reyna remains the most prolific substitute in the league. The 20-year-old scored his sixth goal as a sub today (of seven goals this season in total).
First penalty against BVB: Borussia Dortmund became the last team in the Bundesliga to concede a penalty this term.
Big half-time lead: It was BVB’s biggest half-time lead of the season (4-0).
Quick 3-0 leads: It was 3-0 after 28 minutes in the game against Wolfsburg last weekend; today, that score was achieved eight minutes faster. BVB have scored in the opening quarter of an hour in the last three matches. In the seventh minute in Bochum, in the 14th against Wolfsburg and after only five minutes today.
Home run against the other Borussia: BVB have won their last 09 Bundesliga home games against the Foals by a combined scoreline of 32-5. There is no longer home winning streak in a Bundesliga fixture at present.
