Home/away: The Black & Yellows have won 12 of their last 13 league home games and have scored at least one goal in each of their previous 52 games at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK (ongoing club record in the Bundesliga). 1. FC Heidenheim finished with the third-best away record in the 2. Bundesliga in 2022/23, behind Hamburger SV and Darmstadt 98 (seven victories, six draws and four defeats).

Statistics: The last time BVB managed only two goals in the opening two rounds was in 2016/17. But then the floodgates opened with a 6-0 win against Darmstadt on Matchday 3. Both BVB goals this term have been scored by Donyell Malen, who increased his goal tally for 2023 to 11 in the process. No one has scored more Bundesliga goals since the winter break. Heidenheim have started the season with two defeats (2-0, 3-2). Both goals were scored from set-pieces. Only Leipzig have scored (once) more from dead balls so far.

Reunion: Jan-Niklas Beste played for Borussia Dortmund from 2007 to 2018; he became a German B Junior champion in 2015 and a German A Junior champion in 2017 with BVB, but only made one appearance for the first team (a cup tie in 2017). Patrick Mainka played for the U23s in the Regionalliga from January 2016 to June 2018. Lennard Maloney helped the U23s gain promotion to the 3. Liga in 2021 and played twice for the BVB first team in the Bundesliga in 2021/22. (br)
