A significant chapter in the club’s history has come to an end. The final whistle in the cup match at Union Berlin also signalled the end of Jörg Schmadtke’s time as managing director of VfL Wolfsburg. Four and a half years that, on the one hand, feel shorter because so much has happened, but on the other, the VfL of 2018 that the 58-year-old took over seems much further away today than seems possible. Whichever way you look at it, the bottom line is a record of success that could not have been imagined at the time. And which, given where the Wolves came from, should not be taken for granted.
The start of February not only marks the end of the first transfer window of the year. At VfL Wolfsburg, there has been a planned restructuring at management level following the departure of Jörg Schmadtke. Marcel Schäfer, who until now was sporting director, is now the new managing director for sport, working alongside fellow managing directors Michael Meeske and Dr. Tim Schumacher. Unlike his predecessor, the ex-VfL player, who made 314 appearances for the Wolves and won both the league and DFB Cup, is also responsible for the women’s team as well as the men’s first team.
On 1 February, the new management duo of Marcel Schäfer and Sebastian Schindzielorz assumed their roles at VfL Wolfsburg. Schäfer replaces Jörg Schmadtke as one of the three managing directors of VfL, while Schindzielorz is the club’s new sporting director. Frank Witter, chairman of the VfL Wolfsburg supervisory board, joined them on the podium to talk about…
Having flown out of the traps with two resounding victories before suffering setbacks in both the league and cup, VfL Wolfsburg have had an eventful start to the new year to say the least. The drama is set to continue when the Green-and-Whites host FC Bayern Munich at home at 17:30 CET on Sunday. At his press conference ahead of the game with the Bundesliga giants, VfL head coach Niko Kovac answered the media’s questions on…
VfL Wolfsburg welcome Bundesliga leaders and record champions Bayern Munich to a sold-out Volkswagen Arena on Sunday 5 February (kick-off: 17:30 CET).
Since 1 February, Sebastian Schindzielorz has been back at VfL Wolfsburg in a new capacity. The 44-year-old, who played for the Wolves between 2008 and 2013 and was part of the squad that won the Bundesliga title in 2009, takes over the post of VfL sporting director from Marcel Schäfer, who is now managing director for sport following Jörg Schmadtke’s retirement. In this interview, Schindzielorz speaks about his first few days in the job and the match against Bayern Munich on Sunday.
FC Bayern Munich scored three early goals as the record Bundesliga champions beat VfL Wolfsburg 4-2 at a sold-out Volkswagen Arena on Sunday evening. Julian Nagelsmann’s side produced a ruthless attacking performance, taking an early 2-0 lead thanks to Kingsley Coman’s brace (9’, 14’) before Thomas Müller added a third (18’). Substitute Jakub Kaminski’s first Bundesliga goal reduced the arrears two minutes before half-time and Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich was shown a second yellow card nine minutes into the second half, but Jamal Musiala restored the visitors’ three-goal advantage (73’). Mattias Svanberg’s effort nine minutes from time was merely a consolation for Niko Kovac’s team, who return to action on Matchday 20 against FC Schalke 04 on Friday 10 February (kick-off 20:30 CET).
The Green-and-Whites are back in Bundesliga action on Friday 10 February (20:30 CET), when they travel to FC Schalke 04. Addressing the media ahead of the match, VfL boss Niko Kovac shared his thoughts on… … recent results: “We’re obviously not happy with our last few results, but there are games that can be tight and go the other way. If I look at performances alone, I’m not scared at all. On the contrary, I’m feeling very positive.”
VfL’s second milestone meeting of the second half of the 2022/23 campaign takes them to Gelsenkirchen, where they face bottom-of-the-table Schalke 04 at the Veltins-Arena on Friday 10 February (kick-off 20:30 CET) in what will be the teams’ 50th Bundesliga encounter. While Niko Kovac’s Wolves have lost their last two games in the league, promoted Schalke have managed to grind out back-to-back goalless draws. However, if their recent record against S04 is anything to go by, the Green-and-Whites can be confident of returning to winning ways against Thomas Reis’ team.
VfL Wolfsburg earned their sixth draw of the season on Friday night, with head coach Niko Kovac’s men held 0-0 away to FC Schalke 04, in front of a crowd of 60,836 at the Veltins-Arena.
