Union head to Bayer Leverkusen

1. FC Union Berlin ended 2021 on another successful note with a 1-0 win at VfL Bochum. Max Kruse’s 16th-minute strike on his weaker foot put the game to bed despite the best efforts of the newly-promoted team. Goalkeeper Andreas Luthe was back at his old stomping ground at the Ruhrstadion but he was focused on the task ahead with important saves. Bochum piled on the pressure in the second half with Pantovic missing from close range on 59 minutes. The former Bayern youngster hit the crossbar with about 10 minutes to go as the visitors from Köpenick walked away with all three points.

Union take on Hoffenheim

Union’s dominant second half performance in Leverkusen left Urs Fischer’s side frustrated at not taking all three points from the BayArena. Patrick Schick made it 18 for the season with a first-half opener as Leverkusen bossed proceedings. Gerardo Seoane’s side, fourth in the table pre-match, passed up opportunities before Grischa Prömel bundled in the equaliser near half-time. The midfielder followed up on two excellent stops from Finnish goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky to give Union a lifeline. Fischer made two changes at the break with Levin Öztunali and Andreas Voglsammer entering the game — and Union turned on the style. Prömel put Union ahead but the Köpenick club failed to turn their opportunities in the second 45 into a more convincing lead. Max Kruse hit the crossbar and Voglsammer forced more work out of Hradecky. Jonathan Tah equalised with six minutes to go, but Union had more chances to put the game beyond doubt. In stoppage time, Bastian Oczipka struck off the post as Union had to be content with one point instead of three.

Puchacz joins Trabzonspor

“We are really happy with Tymoteusz’s mentality. We want to give him the loan option to get some minutes for the next half year, which we can’t guarantee that. We consider Trabzonspor a very good loan partner because they have a high quality squad and are playing a very good season. More match practice will definitely help him in his development before he returns to us from 01 July,” said Oliver Ruhnert, 1. FC Union Berlin’s Managing Director for Professional Football.

Union target progress at the Olympic Stadium

Grischa Prömel scored his third goal in two matches as 1. FC Union Berlin came from behind to beat Hoffenheim 2-1 at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. Urs Fischer handed a debut for Dominique Heintz in defence following the departure of Marvin Friedrich to Borussia Mönchengladbach in the week. Both Levin Öztunali and Andreas Voglsammer held their starting positions off the back of the 2-2 draw in Leverkusen. Hoffenheim were on a seven-game unbeaten run heading into Saturday’s encounter and the away side took the lead with Timo Baumgartl turning the ball into the net after 16 minutes. Voglsammer headed in the equaliser about four minutes later. The second half saw Union dominate and the substitution of Sheraldo Becker turned the screw for the Köpenick club. Becker headed wide before helping to set up Max Kruse whose shot came off the bar and was turned in by Prömel to secure all three points.
