FC Union Berlin president Dirk Zingler reported: “We have achieved an outstanding result in sporting terms with 7th in the Bundesliga and the following qualification for the UEFA Europa Conference League. This sporting success and following investments in recent years have meant that the club’s squad, rights and hidden reserves are currently more valuable than at any point in the club’s history. We will continue on this course and make further, significant steps in the coming years.”

1. FC Union Berlin moved temporarily into the top four in the Bundesliga with a 2-1 win over RB Leipzig on Friday night. Taiwo Awoniyi bundled home a knockdown from Timo Baumgartl who would cap off a fine evening with the winning goal in the second half. Christopher Nkunku’s long-range effort brought Leipzig level after 13 minutes. Meanwhile, in the UEFA Europa Conference League, Union travelled to Maccabi Haifa on matchday five knowing a win was required to keep the prospect of qualification alive. Julian Ryerson’s header on 66 minutes secured the points, a first away win, to give the Köpenick club a fighting chance.
But Slavia Prague prevailed with the point having gone ahead through Ivan Schranz’s opener in the 50th minute.
Urs Fischer’s side ran out 2-1 winners in the Bundesliga at home to RB Leipzig last Friday, moving temporarily into the top four positions. Taiwo Awoniyi bundled in the opening goal from a set play, but Christopher Nkunku equalised a few minutes later with a long-range shot. Union’s dominance paid off in the second half as the snow started to come down in Köpenick. A training ground set-piece saw Max Kruse’s shot deflected with Timo Baumgartl following up with a short-distance finish.
Due to this additional infection protection rule, the distance requirement for the permitted 5,000 participants is no longer applicable and the allocation of seats is no longer subject to the checkerboard principle. Therefore, in addition to the main stand, only the back straight and the guest block will be open.
