VfL Wolfsburg

Two Saturday matches

The German Football League (DFL) published the kick-off times for Matchdays 8 and 9 on Thursday. The Green-and-Whites will play VfB Stuttgart on Saturday 1 October at home at the Volkswagen Arena at 15:30 CEST. A week later, they will travel to FC Augsburg on Saturday 8 October, with the kick-off again at 15:30 CEST.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

How Xabi Alonso is reimagining Bayer Leverkusen to get the best out of Hudson-Odoi, Diaby & Co.

Seoane’s issues came from instability within the structure of the team. He based his attacks on finding the quickest way to progress the ball to create scoring opportunities. However, if his team lost the ball while doing it, opponents would have a quick transition opportunity as Leverkusen weren’t structurally prepared in their counter-press and would end up dangerously exposed. This was also their problem last season, but their attack flourished to hide this weakness. This season, though, especially without the injured Florian Wirtz, they haven’t had the means to outscore their rivals like they once did.

Borussia Dortmund

Terzic looks ahead to “defining game” in Frankfurt

At present, Borussia Dortmund are used to playing matches every three or four days. On Tuesday, they secured qualification to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League thanks to a 0-0 draw with Manchester City. The final match of their group-stage campaign will come in Copenhagen next week, though it will have no implications whatsoever on qualification from Group G. Between the two games, there is a real highlight on the agenda: the Black & Yellows are away to Eintracht Frankfurt. “This is not new for us. We knew that we’d often have such spells this season. We’re not alone in this respect,” said BVB coach Edin Terzic in reference to the number of games. Frankfurt have been in UCL action too: having beaten Marseille 2-1 last time out, the Hesse outfit will travel to Lisbon to face Sporting next week with a place in the knockout stages still at stake.

FC Augsburg

FCA U15s kick off international tournament with a draw

After heavy rain in Augsburg for most of the day, the game kicked off at short notice on the artificial pitch at the Paul Renz Academy. The weather conditions – as it only drizzled at the beginning of the game – did no damage to the teams’ performance.  Over two 17 minute halves the sides were evenly matched, with the visitors from Salt Lake City controlling the first half. In the second period, Felix Neumeyer’s side assumed charge of proceedings, and Mateo Mrden had the best chance of the match when he headed the ball just wide, meaning the game finished in a goalless draw.

Bad news: English referee Anthony Taylor appointed to FC Barcelona vs Bayern Munich

Bayern fans will remember Taylor from his previous performances against the club. He was in charge of Hansi Flick’s Supercup win over Sevilla during the Sextuple year, where his refereeing was erratic and downright harmful to the club. Then there was the first leg against Villarreal last season, where Bayern weren’t good enough to make the referee matter in the result.
