Sascha Riether: Our team spirit is the basis for our success

In the second part of our series of interviews looking back at the last year, schalke04.de asked Sascha Riether to look back on the last half of the season. The former player who acts now as a coordinator between the players and the manager talks about the upcoming training camp and a request from Olaf Thon, which he had to turn down.

FC Augsburg

FCA U15s kick off international tournament with a draw

After heavy rain in Augsburg for most of the day, the game kicked off at short notice on the artificial pitch at the Paul Renz Academy. The weather conditions – as it only drizzled at the beginning of the game – did no damage to the teams’ performance.  Over two 17 minute halves the sides were evenly matched, with the visitors from Salt Lake City controlling the first half. In the second period, Felix Neumeyer’s side assumed charge of proceedings, and Mateo Mrden had the best chance of the match when he headed the ball just wide, meaning the game finished in a goalless draw.

FC Bayern München

Bad news: English referee Anthony Taylor appointed to FC Barcelona vs Bayern Munich

Bayern fans will remember Taylor from his previous performances against the club. He was in charge of Hansi Flick’s Supercup win over Sevilla during the Sextuple year, where his refereeing was erratic and downright harmful to the club. Then there was the first leg against Villarreal last season, where Bayern weren’t good enough to make the referee matter in the result.

Eintracht Frankfurt

“Go into this period with a smile”

… team news: “The good news is that Luca Pellegrini and Christopher Lenz have been able to return. On the whole, the personnel situation is looking good. @A_Toure38 also came back quicker than expected, but now he’s picked up an infection. There are a few little knocks from the internationals. Ansgar Knauff has a problem in his ankle. The biggest doubt is Kristijan Jakic, who already had a hip problem before the international break.”

SC Freiburg

Bayern away in the DFB-Pokal

The draw was done at the German Football Museum in Dortmund by SGS Essen player Jaqueline Meißner, who didn’t grant SC their wish of a home tie. Christian Streich’s side will face FC Bayern, the reigning German champions, away from home. Freiburg have made hard work of all three cup ties so far this season, needing extra time against both Kaiserslautern and St. Pauli, and scoring late on in the win at Sandhausen. Bayern, on the other hand, have been extremely convincing. They have beaten Viktoria Köln 5-0, FC Augsburg 5-2, and Mainz 4-0 last time out.

Hertha Berlin

Eight Hertha players called up for international duty

On the 14th November, Bundesliga football will grind to a temporary halt. There will be no action in the German top flight, as well as other international leagues, due to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. There are still eight matchdays to go until then, and one more international break, the last before the world cup – in which eight Herthaner are involved..

TSG Hoffenheim

Rose aiming to finish turbulent week with first away win

RB Leipzig are the team of the moment right now. They have won four consecutive Champions League games by a combined scoreline of 12-3  including an impressive 3-2 victory over Real Madrid  and are on a five-game unbeaten run in the Bundesliga. Impressive stats from Hoffenheim’s table neighbours (sixth place), which are only overshadowed slightly by their away record: Leipzig are winless in eight league games on the road, with not one triumph in another Bundesliga stadium since Marco Rose took over the coaching reins. But the most recent away results – 3-3 in Augsburg and 1-1 in Mainz – should not disguise the fact that Leipzig are very much in form ahead of their trip to Sinsheim. Coach Marco Rose sees the match away to TSG much more as an opportunity to bring the discussion about results on the road to an end – and to extend the positive runs. “We have not yet suffered an away defeat under my leadership; RB’s last came in September. But it’s also correct that I haven’t yet won a Bundesliga away game as the Leipzig coach; that will be the objective on Saturday. We want to put this matter to bed and rise up the table; those are worthy objectives.”
