1. FC Union Berlin

Urs Fischer’s squad head to Viktoria Berlin

The first opponent, Viktoria, suffered relegation in May from Germany’s third division to the Regionalliga Nordost. The light blues started well in the nationwide division, achieving a promotion position after 10 games. But the wheels came off with a long run of defeats and the exit of successful head coach Benedetto Muzzicatto. Despite wins at home to Magdeburg, away to Borussia Dortmund II and at home to Saarbrücken, Viktoria weren’t able to preserve their 3.Liga status. It’s a fresh charge at the Regionalliga under Farat Toku and they will face stiff competition alongside Carl Zeiss Jena, Energie Cottbus, Chemnitzer FC and Hertha II. Viktoria’s lost 1-2 to Magdeburg in a bounce game on Saturday, but their campaign will start competitively with an exciting first round DFB Pokal tie against Bundesliga outfit VfL Bochum.

VfL Wolfsburg

More players in action

Three VfL stars will participate at the 2022 FIFA World Cup: Koen Casteels, Jakub Kaminski and Jonas Wind. While the rest of the Green-and-Whites started an unusually early winter break straight after the victory at TSG Hoffenheim, the Wolves’ World Cup-bound trio were not the only ones to join up with their national teams. In addition to the tournament in Qatar, there are also a number of friendly games lined up. Omar Marmoush, who suffered a bruise to his pelvis in the Hoffenheim game, misses out through injury.

Niclas Füllkrug ruled out of the Freiburg game

Bad news for Werder as Bundesliga top goalscorer Niclas Füllkrug will miss the home game against SC Freiburg on Sunday. The Germany striker, who has scored 16 goals this season, has a calf issue.

Seven VfL players selected for international teams

Seven VfL players are on the road with their national teams in the upcoming FIFA international break. Both Gerrit Holtmann and Patrick Osterhage can celebrate debuts: Holtmann could make his first appearance for the Philippine national team, Patrick Osterhage would be the next German U21 international after Maxim Leitsch and Armel Bella Kotchap. In addition, junior professional Tjark Ernst will first take part in a DFB U19 training course before traveling to Finland for the UEFA Elite Round.

FC Augsburg

FC Augsburg suffer 3-1 defeat to FC Köln

Ermedin Demirović and Mads Pedersen missed the game through suspension, while Mergim Berisha was also out after picking up an ankle injury during the 2-2 draw against Wolfsburg. The club’s top scorer was replaced by Fredrik Jensen, who partnered Dion Beljo up front in the starting XI.

FC Bayern München

Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann hints at heavy rotation vs. Inter Milan in Champions League match

“We’re going to rotate tomorrow because a few players are tired. We want to win the game and we still have important games ahead of us in the Bundesliga. Other players will have the chance to show up tomorrow. 18 points in the group would be very good,” Nagelsmann said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “Leroy Sané is not an option yet for tomorrow. He will likely return to the squad on the weekend. The same goes for Lucas Hernandez. They both trained with the team again. Matthijs de Ligt will not be available either, maybe he will return on the weekend too. Thomas (Müller) will train this week under reduced workload, then we’ll see. But I don’t think he’ll be available this weekend. Regarding Manu (Neuer), we’re hoping he returns this weekend, he coped well with training today. But we have to keep waiting.”
