Following a short summer break after the end of the 2021/22 Bundesliga season, Leandro Barreiro, Jonny Burkardt, Karim Onisiwo, Anton Stach and Silvan Widmer will be back on the pitch in the coming days. The quintet will be in action with their respective national teams in the Nations League and U21 EURO qualifying.
1. FC Union Berlin’s long-standing partner, IFA, will return this year to host the world’s largest trade fair for consumer electronics between September 2-6, 2022 at Messe Berlin. For the last two years, the popular event was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. “We are proud to be able to present this year’s opposition which is steeped in tradition and returns to the top division. It will be a high-quality encounter and emotionally will touch us even more. Like all Union fans, even we at IFA have taken Taiwo to our hearts. We are very pleased that we all now have the opportunity to say goodbye,” said IFA Director Jens Heithecker.
VfL Wolfsburg won 2-1 at TSG Hoffenheim in their final Bundesliga match of 2022, capping off a perfect week in which the Wolves won all three of their games and extended their unbeaten run to nine in all competitions. The Green-and-Whites had to come from behind on Saturday afternoon, though, after Christoph Baumgartner headed the hosts in front from a corner in the 42nd minute. The equaliser came in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time courtesy of an Ozan Kabak own goal. Ridle Baku scored the winning goal in the second half (56’) on the break.

There were mixed emotions again for SV Werder after the 2-1 defeat against SC Freiburg. The Green-Whites played well against the team in fifth place and took the lead through Maximilian Philipp. As has been the case in recent weeks, however, they caused their own downfall and conceded two goals within a few minutes, which was how the match ended. Here are the reactions to the defeat.
The match between VfL Bochum 1848 and Borussia Mönchengladbach came to an abrupt end on Friday...
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We knew that we could take a big step forward today but we weren’t switched on in the key moments and we conceded the goals far too cheaply. We managed to pull one back but we were out of position for their third. It’s the little details that decide games and we made too many mistakes.”
“A shoulder injury is of course very, very painful,” Kahn said (via Az’s Maximilian Koch). “You have to deal with it intelligently and be careful not to put stress on it too early. But Manu is so experienced, he knows exactly how to deal with his body.”
Following several internal discussions, Hertha BSC have decided to part ways with head coach Sandro Schwarz with immediate effect. Volkan Bulut and Daniel Fischer will also no longer be part of the coaching staff. “Sandro and his coaching staff invested a lot of work, energy and passion each day into developing this team. We would like to thank him for that and wish him all the best for the future. Following the very disappointing defeat in Gelsenkirchen, we have taken the time over the last days to analyse and assess our situation and arrived at the conclusion that we needed to make a change in order to pursue our goal of staying up with the few games that remain,” explained sporting director Benjamin Weber. Schwarz said, “I enjoyed being head coach of Hertha BSC and, like everyone else connected to this club, would have liked to have seen our work rewarded with more points. Looking at the table, I can understand why the club have decided to pursue a new path.”
