SV Werder performed well for the majority of the game and made life difficult for FC Bayern. A 4-0 defeat against the reigning Bundesliga champions was extremely disappointing for the hosts. WERDER.DE were in the mixed zone to collect the reaction of players and staff.
The Bavarians were not ever seriously threatened, but did appear to lack some focus. Either way, three points were tacked on to the ledger and the Bavarians remained atop the Bundesliga table — and that was good enough for star midfielder Joshua Kimmich.
RBL head coach discusses Bayer 04 Leverkusen and his new squad ahead of the start of the Bundesliga season
The starting gun fires on another Bundesliga season as VfB host VfL Bochum at the MHPArena on Saturday afternoon (15:30 CEST). Here are the pre-match facts.
Kevin Behrens came off the bench to score his first Bundesliga goal and secure 1. FC Union Berlin a 1-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. Urs Fischer’s side pushed and pushed for the winning goal, creating the bulk of the opportunities in both halves of the 90. But the 11,000-strong crowd in Köpenick needed to wait until two minutes from the final whistle to celebrate the goal when he hooked home a stunning finish. There was a first-half stoppage due to a nasty collision between Timo Baumgartl and Fabian Klos. The Union central defender was stretchered off but Urs Fischer confirmed after the game he is doing well following a concussion. Bielefeld grew more into the game after the interval and were denied on three occasions by the outstanding Andreas Luthe. Some switches and tweaks and Union returned to the driving seat with the momentum behind them. Christopher Trimmel got into the box and couldn’t convert, while Julian Ryerson saw a shot deflected. Substitute Behrens didn’t miss his chance though, scoring at the death — the 30-year-old nearly grabbed a second as his volley smashed against Stefan Ortega’s crossbar.
“We’re on a run,” said coach Jan Zimmermann of the upward turn his team have taken over the course of recent weeks. The 2-1 defeat to Verl in Paderborn during that period was little more than an isolated setback, with the 2-0 home victory against league leaders Elversberg last weekend a fitting reaction from the team. “We deserved to win. That gave us a very important feeling. The lead was good for our game,” said Zimmermann.
The Bavarians were not at their best against Die Fuggerstädter, but still managed a 5-3 victory, which left some of the players a little miffed.
All participants are in agreement that a joint solution is absolutely essential in order to manage the heavy flows of traffic around the stadium more effectively in the long term. Not least because of future DFL licensing requirements, this must above all include an efficient concept as well as a significant expansion of the local public transport offering.
