“The toughest possible game”

The 61st season of the Bundesliga will kick off on Friday 18th August at 20:30 CEST against FC Bayern Munich. The reigning champions from Bavaria have likely eliminated their supposed weakness from last season with the arrival of Harry Kane. Ole Werner revealed in the pre-match press conference that he won’t adapt his team’s preparations around the world-renowned striker more than he would for any other player. Despite being very aware of Bayern’s strengths, the head coach of the Green-Whites is optimistic about the coming fixture and believes his team are up to the challenge.

Streich: “The boys have tunnel vision”

The same question will be posed to both teams as before every other opening matchday: Are the team in good shape, and how do the opposition compare? How well are the new signings being integrated into the squad? Christian Streich explained where the focus lies on the first game of the season: “We haven’t had a match for a few weeks, and every team starts with zero points. We want to get the ball rolling immediately and increase our points tally as much as possible. The start of the season is always a bit tense, but if we start strong and maintain a high morale, this should soon ease off.”

Do everything to get three points against Wolfsburg

In a meeting on Saturday morning, the coaches and players drew a line under the Little Derby and subsequently completed “a really good training session”, according to Terzic. After a few days off, the Black & Yellows have been focusing on the Wolfsburg match since Tuesday. The personnel situation looked good throughout the training week, according to the coach. “We had a lot of outfield players on the pitch this week, we had 26 players on the pitch at times.” Several of them are still getting up to speed in training but they’re almost all available to play.
