Kimmich, though, knows that the coach and the players are going to have to mesh quickly if they want any chance of winning trophies this season.
Oliver Baumann: “It’s a shame because it was actually a good game from us until the goal for 2-1. We had a lot of possession in spells, created good opportunities and could have made it 2-2 with a bit of luck. As is so often the case, we were missing a few little things; we weren’t compact enough at the back and then it gets difficult in Leipzig. We definitely still have room for improvement, but I’m sticking to my guns: we’re on the right track, we just have to show it consistently for 90 minutes.”

The women’s team from Bischofswerda have been in the Regionalliga since 2017, and in those five years have always achieved mid-table safety, neither troubling to promotion spot, nor really troubled by the dangers of relegation, and they have carried this consitency over into this season. After ten games, the Saxon team has three wins (including last weekend’s 3-1 win against Blau-Weiss Hohen Neuendorf), four draws and three defeats. Prior to that victory they held Union’s last opponents, FC Carl Zeiss Jena II, to a 2-2 draw.

Gürpüz played 14 times for Borussia Dortmund’s U23s in the 3. Liga.
While Romano Schmid only ever came into action for the Green-Whites off the bench last season, the 23-year-old has taken on a new role in the 2023/24 campaign. The Austria international has appeared in Ole Werner’s starting XI in 14 of the 16 Bundesliga games so far this season, rising to the occasion despite the tough competition for a spot in the midfield within the squad.
While the boys bid farewell to their much-deserved summer break, it would be a busy month for FC Augsburg’s board, because ultimately, the end of the club’s 12th Bundesliga season signals the beginning of the 13th. As a result, FCA directed their focus towards the upcoming campaign and were active over the transfer period. Goalkeeper Finn Dahmen made his way to the Fuggerstadt, and 19-year-old shot-stopper Marcel Łubik signed a professional contract with the club after a spell with the U23s. Defender Patric Pfeiffer also came to Augsburg in June on a free transfer from Darmstadt.
