A round of two halves

The first half of the 2023/24 Bundesliga season ended on Sunday. SV Werder managed to make the mid-term report card look a bit better with a late equaliser in the 1-1 draw against VfL Bochum. However, no one at the Weser is completely jumping for joy after the first round of matches. The season so far can be divided into two distinct halves, which have left the league’s 13th-placed side with a six-point cushion ahead of the relegation zone.

Oliver Kahn affirms Tuchel isn’t focused on future signings with Bayern Munich right now

When Tuchel was sacked by Chelsea, there were quite a lot of moving parts going on behind the scenes in the upper echelons of the club’s ownership and they spent record numbers in the winter transfer window just a few months after letting Tuchel go. His sacking came about after a 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League in September, but Tuchel has still said that he really felt he was going to have a long-term stint at Stamford Bridge and that the club had really changed too much in the time he’s been there. Reacting to Graham Potter’s sacking over the weekend, Tuchel even remarked that the club he signed for in 2021 didn’t really exist anymore.

Union Face a Stern Test

After six years in the Regionalliga Nordost, SFC Stern 1900 are now directly threatened with dropping out of the third tier. Head coach Marco Böning’s team are currently twelfth, in the relegation places, with twelve points. Considering that there will probably be at least four teams relegated this season – as per the league’s reform from 14 to 12 teams for next season – Stern are already seven points off safety.

Stark’s last-minute equaliser secures point in Bochum

SV Werder Bremen brought home an all-important point from the 1-1 draw on the road against VfL Bochum 1848 on Sunday afternoon. After a tough first half with very few clear-cut chances, both teams picked up the pace after the break and fought until the end. Although Werder had more success in 1-v-1s in the first 45, the hosts got off to a flying start in the second and opened the scoring through a curler from distance by Patrick Osterhage (64’). The visitors continued to apply pressure, which earnt them a last-minute equaliser Niklas Stark in extra time (90 +4’) that saw the clash end in a deserved 1-1 draw.

Match awards from Bayern’s infuriating 2-1 defeat to SC Freiburg

Bayern Munich consistently probed and passed around the Freiburg defense and so often nearly tore it all to shreds. Yet, improbably and impossibly, Freiburg’s defense held up, despite the immense pressure, and a lot of that had to do with Matthias Ginter. The former Borussia Mönchengladbach defender marshaled the backline well, won his challenges, and proved unbeatable on the day. It was an inspired performance that led to a phenomenal result (for Freiburg). Besides, Ginter was heavily rumored to join Bayern in the previous summer transfer window, so this fits.
