Sunday’s match will be the first game for both teams following their joint eliminations from European competition. While Union lost their Europa League last 16 second leg against Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in Anderlecht, Belgium, 3-0 on Thursday, the Frankfurt side also lost 3-0, at SSC Napoli on Wednesday. This is a match for both sides to re-train their focus.
The Black & Yellows lined up in a 4-1-4-1 formation for their second pre-season friendly against Regionalliga outfit Alemannia Aachen at the Tivoli in Aachen. The home team showed their footballing ability from the beginning and made the game difficult for the BVB women. Jasmin Steffens opened the scoring at 1-0 for the home side in the fifth minute. Mandy Reinhardt almost managed to level the scores in the 10th minute but was unsuccessful. Instead, it was Aachen who extended their lead to 2-0 through Narjiss Ahamad (24) and continued to cause the Black & Yellows difficulties. A shot at goal from Ann-Kathrin Lau then landed in the hands of the Aachen goalie (27), and so the BVB women went in at the interval 2-0 down.

Now they’ve drawn Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the quarter finals, and have the benefit of having the second leg of the tie at the Allianz Arena. This is certainly a matchup worthy of this year’s final in Istanbul, but Real Madrid have also progressed to the quarter finals of the competition and are the current holders of the cup having beaten Liverpool last year in Paris.
Germany’s greatest ever footballer has passed away – Franz Beckenbauer died on Sunday at the age of 78. The name of the “Kaiser” is inextricably linked to Bayern Munich. “Franz Beckenbauer is the greatest personality Bayern have ever had. As a player, coach, president, human, he was unforgettable. No one will ever reach his level,” said Uli Hoeness. The Allianz Arena will be lit up in honour of Beckenbauer, and there will be a minute’s silence before kick-off.
