At the beginning of June, the four BVB players became European champions with the German national team in Hungary. Following a 5-4 penalty shootout victory over France in the final, Brunner, Kaber, Herrmann and Wätjen held the trophy aloft. Prior to the first Bundesliga match at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, they were honoured for their special success by Hans-Joachim Watzke (Chairman of the Management Board), Managing Directors Carsten Cramer and Thomas Treß, and Lars Ricken (Director of the Youth Performance Centre) at the side of the pitch. Attacking player Brunner was also chosen as the Player of the Tournament by UEFA.
