Hero of the Day: Matthijs de Ligt reflects on his goal in Bayern Munich’s narrow 1-0 win over Freiburg

Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry, Sadio Mane, and Jamal Musiala all came close to scoring with chances of their own at different stages of the match, but it was Matthijs de Ligt’s 51st minute screamer from distance that secured the three points for Thomas Tuchel and company. The strike was hit so well, that keeper Mark Flekken was absolutely rooted to the spot and just watched it fizz past him with pace into his left corner of the net.

Diogo Leite to Stay an Unioner

After his arrival in Berlin, the 24-year-old quickly established himself as an important component of head coach, Urs Fischer’s, defence. He played 40 of a possible 48 games in all competitions and didn’t play the full 90 minutes in only five of those. He made one assist and was rewarded for his consistently excellent performances with his first call-up for the Portuguese national squad in March 2023.

Borussia Dortmund

“We acted far too passively”

“If we want to achieve our objectives, we need to improve the performance,” declared Edin Terzic following the 1-0 home victory against 1. FC Köln. “We had a lot of possession but we didn’t like which areas we had it in. We acted far too passively in the first half, then switched a few things up; but that also didn’t work so well. If you need two or three touches of the ball too many to make the right decision, it becomes tough to get into the final third and create scoring opportunities. We only managed that once for Jule Brandt’s chance.” That was in the 30th minute.

TSG Hoffenheim

“It’s important all racism is nipped in the bud”

“It is very important that every single person nips racism in the bud. It’s not just an issue of skin colour. It’s also a matter of sexual orientation and religious affiliation. None of that should be an issue at all any more,” said TSG player Kevin Akpoguma, taking a clear stance. Although the 28-year-old, whose father is from Nigeria, has rarely openly encountered racism himself, he is in favour of an open society. “I already have the feeling that things are getting better. No matter your skin colour, religion or who you love: it’s all completely normal and that’s how we should deal with it. We should give everyone the feeling that they can live freely; that’s how the message spreads.”
