VfL Wolfsburg

Milestone meeting

VfL Wolfsburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach faced off in the last 16 of the DFB Cup earlier this season. If you add the final of the 1994/95 competition as well as the teams’ 47 previous Bundesliga meetings, Sunday’s clash at the Volkswagen Arena (kick-off 17:30 CEST) will be the sides’ 50th encounter in all competitions. The Wolves may have lost those two cup games but they still have their noses in front in the head-to-head stakes, having registered 22 victories to Gladbach’s 17. They have scored 72 goals in those matches, conceding 67.

Breaking: Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies pulls up lame, leaves Mainz 05 match

This is purely speculation, but it appeared that Davies pulled his left hamstring as he pulled up lame, while driving down the left side of the pitch. Davies immediately knew something was wrong, went down, and called to the bench to be replaced.

SC Freiburg

“We have to take control of the game”

The stadium will also be full on Saturday, with the home section sold out. However, Matthias Ginter, Philipp Lienhart and Noah Weißhaupt will have to take their places in the stands due to injury. Ginter will not be able to play again for SC this season as he requires an operation on his Achilles tendon.

TSG Hoffenheim

Beier: “I have become more self-confident”

13 goals and seven assists – Maximilian Beier is having a perfect season. Following a two-year loan spell at Hannover 96 in the second tier, the 21-year-old has established himself in the Bundesliga – and staked his claim for bigger things. Julian Nagelsmann gave the striker his first Germany call-up in March – a vindication of his development even if he did not play. Beier’s performances on the pitch are helping him off the pitch too: “I’m become more self-confident, I’ve noticed that recently in everyday life,” he declared. “I always used to be a very shy guy. For example, I always used to discuss with my girlfriend in the supermarket about which of us should ask the assistant where we’d find certain products.” That now stresses him out less – as do interviews, even if they are still not his favourite thing.
