The Black & Yellow Guide to November

Wednesday 1 November (18:00 CET): BVB vs. TSG 1899 Hoffenheim
The cup tie against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim is scheduled for the very first day of the month. This Wednesday evening’s fixture at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK at 18:00 CET will determine which of the two teams progresses to the round of 16. BVB ran out 6-1 victors against TSV Schott Mainz in mid-August in the first round of this year’s competition. Hoffenheim qualified for the second round courtesy of a 4-1 away win against VfB Lübeck.

SV Werder Bremen

“Incredibly important for us”

Marco Friedl had missed the previous four SV Werder games after suffering a syndesmosis ligament tear. The club captain was at that point in extremely good form and had made a vital contribution to his side’s upturn in form around the start of the year. The fact that Friedl returned earlier than expected in the game against VfL Wolfsburg will give his team a boost for the challenges ahead.

Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel wary of Mainz 05

“It’s going to be very difficult. Mainz will prepare intensively for this game. They have their very own style. They are third in the second half table. It’s going to be a brutally difficult task. Playing in Mainz is always tough. We have to be ready,” Tuchel said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “It’s important how the team handles the situation. A lot of things have happened this season. The team has experienced a lot. I experienced in Paris myself how sad it is that the league title is taken for granted. It must not be taken for granted. We’re fighting for the title. We shouldn’t be ashamed of that. In Paris, too, at some point it was no longer enough to become champions. It was downplayed. There’s a lot of work involved in our day-to-day business. We have to fight in games and be ready.”

1. FC Union Berlin

Union host Braga

Sporting Clube de Braga are regulars on the international stage and have been represented in Europe without interruption since the 2004/05 season. The Portuguese side qualified for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 2010, finishing 3rd in a group that included Shakhtar Donetsk, Arsenal and FK Partizan before ultimately reaching the Europa League final, which they narrowly lost 1-0 to FC Porto.

FC Augsburg

CEO Michael Ströll signs long-term contract

The 39-year-old sports economist, who himself featured for FCA’s second team as a player, started as an intern at the then-second tier side in 2006 and assisted in a variety of areas at the club. A native of Bavaria, Ströll was then promoted to an authorised signatory in 2013 and then became the chief commercial officer in 2016. Michael Ströll has been CEO of FCA since the departure of Stefan Reuter in September 2023.

FC Bayern München

Joshua Kimmich is Bayern Munich’s new penalty taker

Kimmich’s well-taken penalty came in the 83rd minute; he sent Ederson flying the wrong way before striking down the center. But it came far too late — by then there was no chance to make up the remainder of the 4-1 deficit. And so the Bavarians could only rue their earlier missed opportunities.

VfB Stuttgart

Late draw against Heidenheim

VfB Stuttgart let slip a 2-0 lead at home to 1. FC Heidenheim, but fought back late on to snatch a 3-3 draw after being 3-2 down.

1. FC Union Berlin
